Was formed in 1902 following the acquisition by the state of the collections belonging to the Italian Fidecommisso Borghese.
First director of the gallery was John Piancastelli Borghese (1845-1926) who was succeeded in 1906 Giulio Cantalamessa, former director of the galleries of the Academy of Venice.
The Borghese Gallery is located inside the Villa Borghese Pinciana in Rome . The museum displays works by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Agnolo Bronzino, Antonio Canova, Caravaggio, Raphael, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian. Can be considered unique in the world with regard to the number and importance of the sculptures by Bernini and paintings by Caravaggio.
